We occasionally receive requests asking about whether the local or virtual classes provide ASL or other types of accommodations for someone who is hearing impaired. While the FPU classes are supported by Ramsey Solutions with regard to the materials used, they are not actually set up by our company. The classes are typically set up by FPU graduates, local churches, and others. Having someone available who knows ASL would be something that they would have set up on their end.
It might also help to know that the FPU membership does include closed captions on the video lessons, so that would cover the main part, which is the lesson itself. While we do occasionally receive an inquiry for a class for hearing-impaired individuals, we do not have a requirement for these locations to provide ASL or other accommodations. When a class does make this available, it is usually because either the coordinator knows ASL or the location (usually a church) provides that service.
Now, having said that we are always looking for individuals who would be willing to lead an FPU class. If you were to lead the FPU class, you could post on the class listing that it is being made available to those who are hearing impaired and will be led by someone who will be using ASL to communicate with the class! If you’ve not been through FPU yourself, keep in mind that about 35% of those who are leading FPU are doing so while going through it themselves for the first time!
